Class Reaction from 4-8-09

I thought Dr. Pope's presentation on how schools receive their funding was interesting. I did not realize that sales tax is now going towards education. I did not know that all the funding is suppose to be divided up equally. We all know this is not happening. This is why I mentioned in class that if it is a lower income area, and the property tax on property is lower, then these same people are not going to go out and go shopping to help the schools with sales tax. Then I was informed that the money is suppose to go to Columbia, and be divided equally. Like I mentioned earlier, we all know this is not what is happening. This was obvious by the chart Dr. Pope provided in class. There was a difference just in York County between districts. With all the discussions we have had in class, and with all the media coverage on education, it appears that we all have alot to be concerned with. I am concerned as a future teacher, and also as a parent of small children. It appears that people are always experimenting with education. The reason I say this is because South Carolina changed from property tax to sales tax to try to help with funding for the public schools. This is not working now, because of the economy. I look at how Rock Hill School District is wanting to rezone every few years. I guess I never realized how much until we began discussing it, and I personally became involved in it myself. Are our own children going to suffer because education and ideas about education is always changing?
