“Literature doesn’t answer any questions –which is the good part-- it leaves everything hanging.” –Maxine Greene - I love this statement. As a former literature teacher I faced this all the time. Students wanted everything to be black and white – a neat ending, or for the story/play/poem to have a sense of complete closure. Yet, life is not like this. Life is full of all the nuances in the decision making process that often leads to ambiguity and ultimately -- I would say -- growth. I like that good literature helps you question yourself, helps you grow, and helps you think differently and at the same time see the similarities we all face. My good friend and colleague based her entire British Literature course last semester around this one question: “Why Literature?”
