Gay Rights

Other Topic
I am a full time nanny, so during naptime I watch the original 90210 that I dvr. This morning actually on the episode, a male gay teacher was fired from his coaching job at a community center for being gay. It was just like the Weaver vs. Nebo, in that the students found out and their parents wouldn't let them play basketball for a gay coach and the community director fired him. No legal action was taken, but I found it interesting and kept thinking to myself, wow, they should go to court, because he would definitely win! At the end of course, the students came back and said that just because he is gay that doesn't mean he has changed as a coach and they all wanted to play for him again and he got his job back. It's just amazing how many real life (well, you know), situations there are that involve this issue. I know of a lesbian couple at a high school, who were walking down the hall holding hands and received a detention for PDA. Now of course, I think we all know that if this were a boy and girl holding hands, nothing would have even been said. At most, the teacher would have said to stop, but there wouldn't have been a detention given. I just find this sad that in todays society, people are still having problems with this and refuse to move on. I wish that people would be more concerned about the education their children are getting and not so much on if their teacher likes boys or girls.

I agree that parents should focus on the quality of education and instruction students receive as opposed to the sexual orientation of the teacher. We live in a country where everyone is entitled to their own opinions, so we will always have people who discriminate against others. We also live in a country where people have the right to choose their lifestyle, so there will always be a diverse population. To me this issue goes along with the college student who was not allowed to graduate with a degree in education because of a supposed intoxicated picture on a myspace page. Just as the quality of educational instruction provided to students is not affected by the teacher's sexual orientation, it is not affected by an adult having a cocktail on the weekend. So if what we choose to do with our lives in our free time does not affect the quality of teaching we provide, and our students are not adversly affected because of it, why are these still issues?

It makes me sad for my cousin that he won't come "out of the closet" at school for fear of losing his job. It doesn't make him any less of a teacher and it's about time parents and everybody else see that as well!
