Other - Professionalism and teacher dress

I thought the article "Teaching attire becoming touchy topic" was interesting since we had so much conversation on the issue in class and on the blog. It has more reasons teachers should dress more or less professionally. I was talking to a second grade teacher who teaches in Rock Hill, and she made the comment that she does not like to have student teachers anymore because they do not dress appropriately. She complained about the spaghetti strapped tops and skimpy clothing the student teachers wore. This is definitely something to remember when we do our student teaching.

I took Teacher Cadet in high school and I can remember our dress was a big issue. So many of the girls thought they could get away with clothes that were not dress code because they were in a different school and no one really said anything to them. It was one of the main issues we discussed before going in to the younger classrooms. Whatever we dress like, that is the image we are giving our student and many of them look up to their teachers, so we need to dress appropriately in order to gain the respect we need.

I was a Teacher Cadet in high school as well and we had the same issue with the dress code. Many of the student teacher's would wear too short of skirts in the schools, which obviously became even shorter when they sat down. Young children look up to their teachers, so I agree that we need to make the best impression possible. What message are we sending to young girls if we, as the teacher, wear short skirts and low cut tops? If teacher's are going to want the title of "Professional" then they need to know the appropriate way to dress while in their classroom. Like they say before an interview, "You need to dress for the job you want!" As a teacher, I hope we all know the appropriate way to do this in order to gain the respect from our students and coworkers.

I agree with all of the ideas that you all have brought up. Students have a dress code they have to follow. I agree that teachers should dress in an appropriate manner also. I think that it is a shame that some school district's have had to develop a dress code where only certain types of clothing or colors can be worn by students. The school districts have had to require pants to be worn with a belt. I think it is time for parents to be responsible for their children's dress. It is pretty bad when schools have to tell parents how to dress their children. I hope that teachers have enough sense to be a good judge of what type of dress is appropriate and what is not. Teacher's are educated people and should be able to make this decision. I know there are always some people who think they do not have to follow the rules.
