Gov. Sanford refusing the stimulus money

After I got home from class last night, I had an e-mail from Rock Hill School District asking parents to support a meeting that was held downtown Rock Hill last night. I am attaching an article that was in the Herald today. York County's four school districts are concerned what will happen to our schools if Gov. Sanford refuses the $700 million as he has vowed to do. The e-mail I received from the school district mentioned without this money, there would be larger student-to-teacher ratios, layoffs, and more furlough days. This could affect us as future teachers. I personally would like to teach in York County when I graduate. This will not only affect York County, but South Carolina as a whole.

There is no way he has thought this idea all the way through. There is so much the state could do with that money. After watching the video in Dr. Ferguson's class and hearing stories about students going to hazardous school, I can not see what his true motive is for his proposed action. Officials from both parties are basically calling him foolish if he does not take the money. As far teaching, society talks about bettering students and classrooms. South Carolina does not hold high ranking in education and testing when compared to the other fifty states. How can a teacher play an effective part in attempting to turn this around with a large class? Each child comes with different needs and possible learning or social issues. Obviously a large ratio is going to do more harm, on top of what we already have, than good.

Susan,
I have already sent an e-mail to Sanford’s office expressing my disgust for his refusal to accept the funding.
