John Dewey High is a very progressive school that exhibits many of Dewey’s principles. His ideas can be seen through the hands on experience emphasized in many of the schools programs. (i.e. the Culinary Arts Program as well as the Computer Science Institute.) I question the beginning few paragraphs of the article about the school (first link) and the author’s interpretation of the school remaining true to Dewey’s core beliefs. Stating, “motivated students should have the flexibility to direct their own education” seemed very close to the radical paradigm that Dewey challenged in Experience and Education. In this book Dewey stated the importance that teachers still provide organization and guidance in a school. It is interesting to browse the school website to see how this schools mission and vision statements are different than most.
